Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is an important Islamic holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. Here are some recommended Sunnah (Prophetic traditions) to follow on Eid al-Adha:

  1. Wake up early and take Ghusl (Bathe): Before attending Eid or Friday prayers, Muslims must bathe. This represents cleanliness and the Messenger Muhammad’s (PBUH) perseverance.
  2. Performing the Eid Prayer: Muslims are encouraged to attend the special congregational prayer held on the morning of Eid al-Adha.
  3. Offering Sacrifice (Qurbani): Giving the Qurbani (sacrificial animal) is a highly recommended Sunnah during Eid al-Adha. It is done to remember Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son and to demonstrate obedience to God. The meat from the sacrificed animal is distributed among family, friends, and those in need.
  4. Takbeer: Takbir at-Tashreeq is the recitation of Takbir during the period of tashriq. It is practiced by Muslims from the time of the morning prayer on the 9th day of the month of Dhul Hijjah until after the afternoon prayer on the 13th day of Dhul Hijjah (before entrance of the dusk prayer). The Takbeer is as follows: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahi al-hamd” (God is the greatest, God is the greatest, there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, God is the greatest, God is the greatest, and all praise is due to Allah).
  5. Dressing in One’s Best Clothes: Muslims are encouraged to dress in their finest attire on the day of Eid. This includes wearing clean and presentable clothing to show joy and respect for the occasion.
  6. Apply perfume :The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) loved perfume, so on the authority of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Women and perfume have been made dear to me, but my comfort has been provided in prayer’” [Sunan an-Nasa’i 3940
  7. Greeting Others: It is a recommended Sunnah to exchange greetings and well wishes with fellow Muslims on Eid. The Arabic greeting “Eid Mubarak” (Blessed Eid) is commonly used to express joy and happiness.
  8. Visiting Family and Friends: Visiting family, relatives, and friends is also a recommended practice on Eid al-Adha. It fosters a sense of community and strengthens bonds between loved ones.
  9. Giving Charity: Generosity and charity are important aspects of Eid al-Adha. Muslims are encouraged to give to those in need and share their blessings by providing food, clothing, or financial assistance to the less fortunate.
  10. Expressing Gratitude and Remembering Allah : Eid is a time to express gratitude to God for His blessings. Muslims are encouraged to engage in remembrance of Allah (dhikr) and thank Him for His mercy and provisions.

These are some of the recommended Sunnah practices to follow on Eid al-Adha. It’s important to note that while these practices are highly encouraged, they are not obligatory. The specific traditions may vary among different cultures and communities, but the underlying spirit of gratitude, worship, and kindness remains central to the celebration of Eid al-Adha.
