Eid al-Fitr is a Muslim festival celebrated at the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) established several sunnahs (practices) for Muslims to observe on this occasion. Some of these sunnahs include:
- Eating before the Eid prayer: It is recommended to eat something sweet, such as dates, before leaving for the Eid prayer.
- Taking a bath or shower: Muslims are encouraged to take a bath or shower before going to the Eid prayer.
- Wearing new or clean clothes: Muslims are encouraged to wear new or clean clothes on the day of Eid.
- Saying Takbir: Muslims are encouraged to say Takbir (Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah; Allahu Akbar wa lillahi al-hamd) during the night and day of Eid.
- Going to the Eid prayer: Muslims are encouraged to attend the Eid prayer in congregation, which is usually held in a mosque or an open area.
- Giving Zakat al-Fitr: Muslims are required to give Zakat al-Fitr, a charitable donation, before the Eid prayer. This is usually in the form of food or money given to the poor.
- Congratulating one another: It is customary for Muslims to congratulate each other on the day of Eid by saying “Eid Mubarak” or “Blessed Eid.”
- Visiting family and friends: Muslims are encouraged to visit family and friends on the day of Eid, especially those who are less fortunate.
- Taking different routes to and from the prayer: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would take different routes when going to and from the Eid prayer, and it is recommended for Muslims to do the same.
- Reciting the Eid Takbir: Muslims are encouraged to recite the Eid Takbir aloud on the day of Eid, particularly after the Eid prayer and throughout the three days of Eid. The Eid Takbir is: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahi al-hamd.”
- Offering the Eid prayer in an open area: It is recommended to perform the Eid prayer in an open area if possible, to accommodate a larger congregation and to show the unity of the Muslim community.
- Giving gifts: Muslims are encouraged to give gifts to family and friends on the day of Eid, particularly to children.
These are some of the sunnahs that Muslims can observe on the day of Eid al-Fitr. However, it is important to remember that these practices are voluntary and not mandatory, and the most important aspect of Eid is to celebrate and express gratitude to Allah for the blessings of Ramadan and the opportunity to observe it.
