When was this Dua recited by Musa (PBUH)?
This dua was recited when Musa (as) was compelled to flee the city, travel through the desert, and arrive in Madyan.
Prophet Musa (as) came upon a group of male shepherds who were watering their flock at a well after a long trek. He observed two women waiting in the back with their sheep while keeping their distance. Why? They decided that it would be safer to wait than to interact with the men who had gathered at the well for whatever reason.
They stated to Musa (as) that they had to take on this responsibility because their father was an elderly man who was unable to feed their flock. Considering that Musa (as) was untidy and fatigued from his journey, it is possible that he did not consume much food or liquid. He was still sympathetic, “so he watered (their flocks) for them, and then he turned back to the shade.” Rabbi innee limaaa anzalta ilaiya min khairin faqeer, which translates to “My Lord, verily I am, for whatever benefit You would bring down to me, in need,” was the du’a he repeated as he turned back to the shade in verse (28:24).
Helping these women in a distant town amid strangers was a devout gesture by Musa (as). He prayed to Allah, pleading with him to give him additional chances to carry out kind deeds like the one he had just done. Also take note of the fact that after helping the women, he turned back to the shade and “watered (their flocks), for them.” In this du’a, Musa (as) also makes use of his situation by claiming that he is faqeer, which is Arabic for “in need” or “in poverty.”
Soon after he made this Dua, Allah accepted it and provided hime with job, wife, house and food.
