According to a new alarming UNESCO report, there is a severe lack of appropriate governance and regulation of technology in the field of education.
The report titled ‘Technology in Education: A Tool on Whose Terms?’ advocates for a shift towards a more “human-centered vision” in which digital technology serves to augment rather than detract from the educational process.
Does technology enhance or diminish learning?
The report emphasises a common yet unhealthy pattern in which technology is frequently introduced to “plug a gap” without considering the far-reaching consequences for national economies, children’s mental health, or the environment.
Instead, it suggests a deliberate and reflective approach to technology deployment, suggesting that stakeholders consider four factors: suitability, equity, scalability, and sustainability.
“Put the needs of the student first and assist educators. Audrey Azoulay, director-general of UNESCO, stated that online connections cannot replace human interaction.
Concerning appropriateness, the report noted that while some forms of educational technology may enhance certain types of learning in certain contexts, a lack of equilibrium or improper application may lead to unsatisfactory outcomes.
