How to protect yourself from Dajjal?

Dajjal is an Arabic word derived from the root word Dajl. It refers to a liar or a deceitful. The Dajjal, also known as the Antichrist, will appear towards the end of the world, posing one of the biggest challenges to believers. He will claim to be God and use his extraordinary abilities to deceive others.

Every prophet, including Prophet Muhammad (saw), warned his people about the Antichrist and sought protection from him. “From the creation of Adam through the Last Hour, there will be no creature (causing more trouble) than the Dajjal,” Prophet Muhammad (saw) declared. (Sahih Muslim)

Another hadith claims that Allah’s Messenger (sa) got up in front of the crowd and referenced Dajjal, saying:

“I warn you about him, as every prophet has warned his people, but I will tell you something about him that no prophet has informed his followers: Dajjal is blind, whereas Allah is not.” (Shaih Bukhari)

The question then becomes: how can we avoid being drawn into this trial? In this regard, Prophet Muhammad (sa) has given us clear instructions.

Self-education is essential

People of understanding receive insight from Allah (swt). To defend ourselves against the Antichrist, we must first learn about him and educate ourselves. Prophet Muhammad (saw) described his physical appearance, attributes, and behaviours in numerous authentic hadiths.

Keep your faith alive.

Once upon a time, Prophet Muhammad (sa) said:

“When three things appear: the rising of the sun in its place of setting, the Dajjal, and the beast of the earth, faith will not help the one who has not previously believed or has gotten no benefit from his faith.” (Muslim)

We must not only believe in Allah, but also endeavour to nurture and grow in faith, in light of this hadith.

Supplicate/Make Dua

Prophet Muhammad (sa), our mentor and teacher, supplicated to Allah in every salah (prayer), after the tashahhud (proclaiming Allah’s oneness) and before the tasleem, for protection against Dajjal (the concluding act in prayer where one says Assalamu alaykum). We can study the meaning of this dua and incorporate it into our prayers. We must seek refuge in Allah, who is All-Powerful.

According to Ibn Abbas (ra), the Messenger of Allah (sa) taught them this supplication in the same spirit as he taught them a surah (chapter) of the Quran. He’d tell them to say something like:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ

“O Allah, we seek refuge from the anguish of hell with you. And I seek refuge with you from the anguish of the grave, from Dajjal’s (the false Messiah’s) trial, and from the trial of life and death.” (Muslim)

Read Surah Al-Kahf

For protection against the Antichrist, Prophet Muhammad (sa) advised us to memorise and recite the first and last 10 verses of Surah al-Kahf. He stated, “

“Whoever memorises the first 10 verses of Surah al-Kahf by heart will be safe from the Dajjal.” (Muslim)

He said in another hadith:

“Whoever memorises the last 10 verses of Surat al-Kahf will be saved from Dajjal’s (Antichrist’s) trial.” (Shaih Muslim)

Furthermore, we must remember the life lessons included within the verses of Soorat al-Kahf while reciting them. These lessons will assist us in deepening our faith.

Maintain your adherence to the Quran.
Keep in mind the reality of this life and Allah’s sincerity.
Polytheism should be avoided.
Make haste to do good actions

Avoid This

Scholars say that one of the wisdoms of reciting Soorat al-Kahf for protection is because the first few verses tell the account of the cave dwellers who, rather than confronting evil, ran from it due to the magnitude of the ordeal.

The following hadith also backs this up:

“Let him who hears of the Dajjal (Antichrist) flee from him, because I swear to Allah, a man will come to him thinking he is a believer and follow him because of the perplexing concepts he has awakened in him.” (Abu Dawud; genuine)

The Prophet (sa) stated, as recounted by Umm Sharik (rah):

“People will flee Dajjal and seek refuge in the mountains.” (Muslim)
