The Moroccan soccer team created World Cup history on Saturday in Qatar by overcoming Portugal and moving on to the quarterfinals, making history by becoming the first Arab and African nation to do so.

With a FIFA ranking of 9 vs. 22, Portugal was the favourite to defeat Morocco in the quarterfinal match, but the Moroccan team known as the “Atlas Lions” achieved a historic victory of 1-0. To win, Youssef En-Nesyri scored.

Why it matters: Morocco, which upset Spain on Tuesday, is the first Arab and African nation to ever reach a World Cup semifinal and the first to advance to the quarterfinals. This has led to a large Moroccan team fan base across North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East.

Both Arabs and Berbers, often known as Amazigh people, who are native to North Africa, make up Morocco’s population.

The Moroccan team has also received accolades for raising Palestinian flags in support after games. Many Western Saharan refugees, though, are noticeably not rooting for Morocco in this World Cup.

Walid Regragui, a Moroccan coach, only assumed control in August. Regragui chose a lot of players with Moroccan ancestry who were born in Europe for the team and said every Moroccan is Moroccan regardless of where he was born.
