On Thursday, a mosque in central Germany’s Goettingen city got a letter with anti-Muslim threats along with a Swastika and other neo-Nazi insignia.

The letter, according to the chairman of the mosque association, Mehmet Ibrahimbaş, used language that was both racist and Islamophobic and bore the neo-Nazi nickname “NSU 2.0.”

“Our mosque community and Muslims in Goettingen are worried due to the continued threats of violence,” he added, adding that it was the second threatening letter they had received in a number of months.

The mosque, which is run by the Turkish-Muslim umbrella organisation DITIB, had a swastika painted on its wall in September of last year by unidentified perpetrators.

“NSU 2.0” refers to the National Socialist Underground, a neo-Nazi terrorist organisation that was exposed in 2011 and was responsible for the death of 10 individuals as well as bombings of immigrants.

Recent years have seen an increase in racism and Islamophobia in Germany, which has been brought on by far-right propaganda that takes advantage of the refugee crisis to incite fear of foreigners.

610 Islamophobic hate crimes were reported by police nationwide in 2022, according to the most recent data.

Between January and December of last year, 62 mosques were attacked, and at least 39 persons suffered injuries as a result of anti-Muslim violence.

Numerous incidents of intimidation, vandalism, and property destruction against Muslims were also included in the statistics.

Germany, a nation of more than 84 million people, is home to the second-highest percentage of Muslims in Western Europe, after France. Official statistics indicate that there are close to 5 million Muslims living there.
