On his first night at Bute House, Scotland’s new First Minister Humza Yousaf led his family in prayer.

“A special moment leading my family in prayer in Bute House as is customary after breaking fast together,” he tweeted, sharing photos of the prayer and family.

On Tuesday, the Scottish Parliament elected 37-year-old SNP leader Yousaf as first minister with 71 votes.

Yousaf is the first ethnic minority leader of a devolved government and the first Muslim to lead a major UK party.

Scottish Conservative Party leader Douglas Ross placed second with 31 votes.

Yousaf narrowly defeated intra-party rival Kate Forbes before the parliamentary vote, with Ash Regan in third.

On Monday, Yousaf defeated Forbes 52.1% to 47.9% after Regan’s elimination.

The first South Asian and Muslim Cabinet secretary in Scotland was Yousaf, who joined the SNP in 2005.

At 26, Yousaf became the youngest Scottish MSP when he was elected as an additional member for Glasgow in May 2011.
