Qatar fans remind Germany of Ozil Racism Row

During Sunday’s match against Spain, Qatari football fans held posters of former Germany star Mesut Ozil while covering their lips in reaction to that nation’s World Cup protest.
Some supporters had drawn portraits of Ozil on display, while others had pictures of him representing Germany.
In protest of FIFA’s decision to outlaw the “One Love” LGBT solidarity armbands, the German squad covered their mouths during their opening World Cup match.
When FIFA announced that players would earn a yellow card for the political gesture, captains of various European teams decided against wearing the armbands.
Born in Germany to Turkish immigrants, Ozil accused the country’s football federation, fans, and media of racism in their treatment of people with Turkish origin.
When we win, I am German, but when we lose, I am an immigrant, Ozil stated.

harassment that occurred when Ozil and teammate Ilkay Gündogan of Germany posed for photos with Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey. Following that, during a 2018 World Cup game, German spectators started cursing at him.
Following the match, criticism against Ozil escalated, helped by comments from Oliver Bierhoff, manager of the Germany team, who stated that the player might not have even made the German roster.
Reinhard Grindel, the head of the German Football Association, later said that he should have backed Ozil more.
After Sunday’s 1-1 tie with Span, Gündogan, who is still a member of the national team, declared that his entire focus moving forward would be on playing football.
Sincerely, I believe that politics has reached its conclusion, remarked Gündogan. “I come from a Muslim family, and Qatar is very happy to be the first Muslim nation to host the World Cup. Muslim community is this proud. So I believe that it is now solely about football.
