According to local media sources, two Islamic schools have been shut down in Montpellier, a city in southern France.

Actu.fr, a news outlet, reported on Wednesday that on Tuesday, officials conducted ad hoc inspections at the two schools and instructed the administrators to close them.

Hugues Moutouh, the governor of the Herault region, gave the orders for the raids to be carried out.

Additionally, one of the schools will close a small mosque.

The article stated that Moutouh claimed the mosque was operating without authorization and that the schools were “illegal”.

A contentious new law that France passed last year has drawn criticism for singling out Muslims, and the nation has seen 25 mosques closed for a variety of reasons.

The new law, which is designed to give a robust response against “terrorism” and “radical Islam,” has in fact sparked a violent crackdown on Muslim visibility and organisation, according to the European Islamophobia Report 2021, which was published a few months ago.

According to the study, France is one of the continent’s “primary hotspots of anti-Muslim hostility and Islamophobic events.”

According to the research, “Islamophobia in France is essentially a result of the state, which aims to build a “Islam of France” and denies French Muslims the right to self-determination, turning them into “Muslims without Islam.”
