In recent years, the Muslim population in England and Wales has grown dramatically. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) census, which was released on Tuesday, November 29, served as its foundation.

The census, which was conducted on March 21, 2021, reveals that the Muslim population in England and Wales has grown by 44% in ten years, totaling 3.9 million people, or 6.5% of the nation’s population. It has increased from the 2.7 million Muslims who called England and Wales home in 2011, which was 4.9% of the total population.

According to the data, if the Muslim populations in Scotland and Northern Ireland are also taken into account, there are currently about four million Muslims living in the UK.

The largest concentration of Muslims is in London. In London, 15% of residents identify as Muslims, up from 12.6% in 2021. This implies that there are more than 1.3 million Muslims in London alone.

The Tower Hamlets neighbourhood had the largest percentage of residents who identified as Muslims as of 2011, up from the previous year’s 38.0%. Blackburn, where Darween is 35.0%, and Newham, where 34.8% of respondents identified as Muslims, are other areas with high Muslim response rates.

Additionally, it is abundantly clear from the census’s religious data that the number of Christians who practise traditional religions in England and Wales has steadily decreased to no more than 50%. The only religion whose numbers have consistently increased is Islam.

Professor Linda Woodhead forecasts that Islam will continue to increase rapidly in the UK based on the census. Prof. Woodhead estimated that the Muslim population in England could be as high as 8% right now, which is contrary to the findings of the ONS survey.

By pointing out that the Muslim community in Britain satisfies all requirements for significant growth from a community, institutional, and religious standpoint, Prof. Woodhead also believes that Islam will play a significant role in the future of the UK’s religious landscape.
