‘Hats off to Qatar for hosting an incredible World Cup’, the British Prime Minister tweeted on Sunday.

Just before England’s match against Senegal on Sunday, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak praised Qatar for hosting what he called “an incredible World Cup” in a tweet.

Hats off to Qatar for holding an amazing World Cup thus far, continued Sunak, who also noted that the group stages would go down as one of the all-time bests.

His remarks came a day after FIFA declared that supporters will be in the greatest numbers ever for the Qatar World Cup 2022.

The match between Argentina and Mexico at Lusail Stadium on November 26 drew a record-breaking 88,966 spectators from the Gulf region, making it the largest attendance in FIFA history.

Qatar hosted the first-ever World Cup to be held in the Arab region, and it was a huge success with 2.45 million spectators and an average occupancy rate of 96%.

Additionally, Qatar has resisted criticism from Western media, which questioned its suitability to host the athletic event by pointing to its vast geographic area.

According to a Downing Street statement, Sunak’s tweet on Sunday came two days after the British PM spoke with the Emir of Qatar about defence cooperation and the Ukraine issue.

The statement stated that Sunak and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani of Qatar also decided to continue their collaboration bilaterally and through a potential trade agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council.
