A Saudi newspaper said that the government has now approved marriage contracts (Nikah) to be carried out at Mecca and Medina, which are the two holiest places in Islam. This is one of the things that was done to make the experiences of pilgrims and guests better.
According to Al Watan, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah started a programme that will make it easy and quick to sign marriage contracts at the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina.
Regarding the sacredness of both locations, experts see this effort as a chance for businesses to come up with new ways to host these events in a respectful way.
A Saudi marriage official called Musaed Al Jabri said that it is legal in Islam to sign a marriage contract at a mosque. He said that it was known that Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) had performed the wedding service of a friend at the mosque.
According to Al Jabri, it is already normal for people in Medina to sign marriage contracts at the Prophet’s Mosque.
“There are several reasons for this,” Al Jabri said. It’s sometimes customary to ask a lot of family members of the folks who are getting married. A lot of the time, the family home of the potential bride can’t fit all of the guests. So, the marriage contract is signed at either the Prophet’s Mosque or the Quba Mosque, which was the first mosque ever built in Islam.
He said that some people believe that making a marriage contract at the mosque brings “blessing and good fortune.”
As for the rules that people attending the event should follow, Al Jabri said that they shouldn’t use loud voices to distract people who are praying. “It’s also important to respect the sacredness of the place and not bring too much food, coffee, or sweets,” Al Jabri said.
Millions of Muslims from inside and outside of Saudi Arabia perform Umrah at the Grand Mosque every year. They also visit the Prophet’s Mosque and other important Islamic sites in Medina.
