Here are three meal preparation ideas for suhur (the pre-dawn meal) during Ramadan:
- Oatmeal with Nuts and Fruits:
- Ingredients:
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 2 cups water
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup chopped nuts (such as almonds, walnuts, or pistachios)
- 1/4 cup chopped dried fruit (such as apricots, dates, or raisins)
- 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
- Instructions:
- In a medium saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
- Add the oats and salt and reduce the heat to medium-low.
- Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5-7 minutes, or until the oats are tender and the mixture is thick.
- Stir in the nuts, dried fruit, and sweetener (if using).
- Serve hot.
- Shakshuka:
- Ingredients:
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 onion, chopped
- 1 red bell pepper, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
- 4-6 eggs
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Fresh parsley or cilantro, chopped (optional, for garnish)
- Instructions:
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the onion and bell pepper and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the garlic, cumin, paprika, and cayenne pepper and cook for another minute, stirring constantly.
- Add the diced tomatoes and stir to combine.
- Simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the mixture has thickened.
- Using a spoon, make small wells in the mixture and crack an egg into each well.
- Season with salt and black pepper.
- Cover the skillet and cook until the egg whites are set but the yolks are still runny, about 5-7 minutes.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.

- Ingredients:
- 2 ripe bananas, frozen
- 1 cup frozen mixed berries (such as strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries)
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1/4 cup almond milk (or any milk of your choice)
- 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
- Toppings of your choice (such as chopped nuts, sliced fruit, granola, or coconut flakes)
- Instructions:
- Combine the frozen bananas, frozen berries, Greek yogurt, milk, and sweetener (if using) in a blender.
- Blend until smooth and creamy.
- Pour the smoothie into a bowl.
- Add your desired toppings.
- Serve immediately.
