What to do in the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah?

A Muslim pilgrim walks with his son along the road in the Mina valley five kilometres (three miles) east of the Saudi Arabian holy city of Mecca, on November 14, 2010, as some 2.5 million Muslim pilgrims descend on the holy city for the annual Hajj pilgrimage. The passage to Mina marks the official launch of the hajj on the eighth day of the Muslim calendar month of Dhul Hijja. The day is known as Tarwiah (Watering) as pilgrims in the past stopped at Mina to water their animals and stock up for the trip to Mount Arafat. The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are considered highly blessed and significant in Islam. Here are some of the best things you can do during this period:

  1. Perform Hajj: If you have the means and have not performed Hajj already, these ten days offer a great opportunity to embark on the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.
  2. Observe fasting: Fasting during these ten days, especially on the Day of Arafah (the 9th day), is highly recommended. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.
  3. Increase in voluntary prayers: Engage in additional voluntary prayers, especially the Sunnah prayers associated with the obligatory prayers. Praying extra units of prayer will bring you closer to Allah and earn you more rewards.
  4. Recite the Quran: Dedicate time to reciting the Quran, reflecting on its meanings, and trying to implement its teachings in your life. Increase your recitation during these blessed days to earn more rewards.
  5. Give charity: Make a conscious effort to give charity during these ten days. Generosity is highly encouraged in Islam, and giving charity is a means of purifying your wealth and seeking Allah’s blessings.
  6. Remember Allah abundantly: Engage in dhikr (remembrance of Allah) by reciting the glorification of Allah, sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and seeking forgiveness from Allah. Fill your days and nights with remembrance and seeking closeness to Him.
  7. Perform voluntary prayers at night: Wake up for Tahajjud prayer, the voluntary night prayer, and offer additional prayers during the late night or early morning. This is a time when the blessings and mercy of Allah are abundant.
  8. Seek forgiveness: Repent sincerely for any sins and seek forgiveness from Allah. Use this period to reflect upon your actions, seek His forgiveness, and strive to improve your character and behavior.
  9. Learn and reflect on the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham): Prophet Ibrahim’s story is closely associated with the rituals and significance of the Hajj. Read about his life and reflect on the lessons we can learn from his unwavering faith and obedience to Allah.
  10. Spread goodness: Use these blessed days to perform acts of kindness, help those in need, reconcile with others, and strengthen your relationships. Be a source of goodness and positive influence in the lives of others.

Remember, the key is to engage in acts of worship and good deeds with sincerity and a pure intention, seeking Allah’s pleasure. May Allah accept our efforts and grant us His blessings during these special days.
