Top 5 Benefits of Reciting the Quran
2 min read
Reflecting on Allah’s verses is, in fact, a type of worship that brings one closer to Him. The Quran is more than a book; it is an eternal guidance to life, death, and the hereafter.
The order for his people to pursue knowledge was revealed to Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. by Allah s.w.t. through the spirit of Iqra’ (reading). The Prophetic word to humanity was built on this foundation. The Prophet explicitly emphasises the need of knowledge. This propagation of knowledge for the benefit of all humanity had educated humanity from the Dark Ages’ ignorance.
Here are 5 reasons you should read Quran often
1.You will be rewarded for each letter of the Quran that you read.
Sayyidatina Aishah r.a reported:
مَن قَرَأَ حَرْفًا مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ فَلَهُ بِهِ حَسَنَةٌ وَالْحَسَنَةُ بِعَشْرِ أَمْثَالِهَا لاَ أَقُولُ الم حَرْفٌ وَلَكِنْ أَلِفٌ حَرْفٌ وَلاَمٌ حَرْفٌ وَمِيمٌ حَرْفٌ
Whoever recites a letter from Allah’s Book, then he receives the reward from it, and the reward of ten the like of it. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter
(Sunan At-Tirmizi)
2. Quran Brings calmness to heart
Remembrance includes reciting the Quran (zikir). When you do zikir, you will achieve inner serenity and tranquilly, as stated in the Quran:
الَّذينَ آمَنوا وَتَطمَئِنُّ قُلوبُهُم بِذِكرِ اللَّهِ ۗ أَلا بِذِكرِ اللَّهِ تَطمَئِنُّ القُلوبُ
“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured”
(Surah Ar-Ra’ad, 13:28)

3. You get rewarded for trying to read
The Arabic language is a strange language for some of us. When you’re a beginner, you’re more likely to stutter and struggle to read it fluently. It’s frustrating enough not to understand what you’re reading; add to that the need to practise reading in numerous languages and letters.
But have no fear, Allah s.w.t. is All-Wise and All-Merciful. He will double your reward for your efforts to read the words of the Quran!
Sayidatina Aishah (r.a.) reported:
الذي يقرأ القرآن وهو ماهر به مع السفرة الكرام البررة، والذي يقرأ القرآن ويتتعتع فيه وهو عليه شاق له أجران
“The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honourable and obedient scribes (angels), and he who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have two rewards.”
(Sahih Al-Bukhari & Muslim)
4. Guidance from Darkness to Light
As humans, we are always in need of someone to talk to and share our troubles with. While making dua is one way to communicate with Allah, reading the Quran can also provide answers. It’s one of Allah’s ways of communicating with us. 1400 years ago, he handed down instructions for us! In a couple of Surahs in the Quran, Allah s.w.t. says:
كِتابٌ أَنزَلناهُ إِلَيكَ لِتُخرِجَ النّاسَ مِنَ الظُّلُماتِ إِلَى النّورِ
“A Book We have sent down to you so that you may bring forth mankind from the darkness into the light..”.
(Surah Ibrahim, 14:1)
5. To its companions, the Qur’an will act as an intercessor
Many Saheeh Hadith demonstrate that on the Day of Judgement, the Quran will intervene for its companions. Abu Umaamah al-Baahili says,
“I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: “Read the Quran, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection interceding for its companions.”
– Muslim (804)
