A Muslim magnate has been granted permission to convert a significant London landmark into a mosque.
The Sun reports that Asif Aziz, 56, also known as Mr. West End, will acquire the Trocadero in the heart of the capital.
The application to construct a mosque with a capacity of one thousand people was withdrawn due to community opposition.
The Daily Mail reported on Sunday that Westminster Council has approved a three-story mosque for 390 congregants.
It reopened in 1984 as an exhibition and entertainment venue, with Sega sponsoring the building.
In 2020, a portion of the building that had been downsized in 2011 will reopen as a hotel.
In 2005, Mr. Aziz purchased the Trocadero for more than £220 million ($362 million).
It is believed that he is establishing the mosque via his charitable organisation, the Aziz Foundation.
According to them, the mosque will serve Muslims who live and work in the area, as well as vacationers visiting London.
Mr. Aziz is the chief executive officer and founder of Criterion Caption, a property group that owns significant portions of London’s West End.
