In a battle, Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) was accompanied by a guy who was very valiant and effective against the adversaries, according to Jarir ibn ‘Abdullah al-Bajali (may Allah have pity on him).

They gathered the booty after the battle. Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) only gave the man some of the booty he was due. The man would not settle for anything less than what was due him. Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) then shaved his head and gave him ten lashes.

The man went to ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) as he was sitting in his group after gathering his hair. I swear by Allah, he uttered as he put his hair in front of Umar (RA). I would have taken care of your deputy myself if it weren’t for the fire of Hell! Then he told him about what Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) had done to the man.

“To proceed; So-and-so has narrated to me such-and-such,” ‘Umar wrote to Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with them both). I swear you must also sit where people can see you if you did this to him in front of them so he could get back at you. If you had done this to him in private, you may do it in private.

The man brought Abu Musa the letter. The populace commanded “Forgive him.”
By Allah, I won’t leave him for anyone, the man declared.

He glanced up at the sky and murmured, “O Allah, I have forgiven him,” when Abu Musa sat down to exact revenge.

Moral of the Story: The fact that even one of the commanders of the Caliph is subject to punishment if he has offended someone illustrates the tremendous extent of justice that is provided to people in Islam.
