SUPPLICATION OF PROPHET ZAKARIYA (AS) TO HAVE A BABY

رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِي فَرْدًا وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الْوَارِثِينَ

Rabbi laa tazarnee fardanw wa Anta khairul waariseen
“My Lord, do not leave me alone [with no heir], while you are the best of inheritors.”
Surah Anbiya Ayat 89

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ

Rabbi hab lee mil ladunka zurriyyatan taiyibatan innaka samee’ud du’aaa
“My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication.”
Surah Imran Ayat 38

These verses explain how a believer who does du’a and worships Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) on a regular basis can have his or her request granted. Prophet Zakariya (as) is said to have resorted to Allah (swt) in his nineties and requested for a child. He was old and sickly, and his wife was barren, yet nothing is impossible with Allah’s kindness. “My Lord, how will I have a boy while my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?” he says in Surah Maryam ayat 8-9. “Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me, for I formed you before you were nothing,” [an angel] stated.

It’s never too late to pursue your goals and dreams. Did it happen right away for Zakariya, who was an Allah’s prophet? No, Allah blessed Zakariya (as) with his son when he was in his advanced age. So, go to your Lord and make a request, but be patient. For some, it may happen right away, for others, it may take some time, and for still others, it may never happen, and Allah knows best. One thing we should avoid is comparing ourselves to others, because comparison is the thief of pleasure, as the adage goes. Make a list of minor things for which you are grateful so that Allah can bless you in other ways. It’s common and acceptable to have low points; nevertheless, mending is a process that takes time.

Consider how you would like to react in this situation. You have complete choice over whether you approach situations with fear, courage, bitterness, or humility. After viewing the treasures Allah had provided Maryam (ra), Prophet Zakariya (as) submitted to Allah in submission, realising that Allah will provide without measure for whomever He wills.
