The Egyptian government will ban the face-covering niqab in schools starting on September 30 after the current term.

Students can opt to wear a headscarf, but it must not obscure their faces, said Education Minister Reda Hegazy on Monday.

Additionally, the child’s guardian must be informed of their choice and it must not have been influenced by outside factors.

“It is the role of Arabic language, religious education, and social and psychological education teachers to prepare students psychologically to implement the ministry’s decision with kindness and gentleness, taking into account their psychological state and age,” he said.

Egypt has debated the niqab in classrooms for years.

Worldwide, Muslim women have worn the robe for religious reasons for ages.

Rights groups say that limiting the niqab violates civil liberties under the Egyptian constitution.

Niqab restrictions are in place in several Egyptian governmental and private institutions.

In 2020, an Egyptian court upheld Cairo University’s 2015 ban on face veils for teachers.
