We sometimes wonder why we work so hard when our earnings aren’t enough to support our expenses. We question why our money never seems to be enough to meet the demands of our family and home. According to academics, this is a symptom of a lack of divine blessings (barakah) in our prosperity, rather than a lack of wealth.

When our finances are tight, it can be both a test and a kindness from Allah SWT. Allah may use our wealth to cause us to turn to Him in prayer and dua, to be patient, and to be content. It has the potential to lead to our sins being forgiven and us learning to rely on Him.

When we devote our souls to Allah SWT, surrender entirely to Him, and make Him our whole objective and purpose (rather than the bounties), barakah will flow into our life from all directions without our intervention.

There are things we can do, alhumdulillah, to raise the barakah in our wealth, and one of the most important is dua. Every day, we should petition Allah SWT to increase our benefits.

What exactly is Barakah?
The term “barakah” denotes “increase,” “growth,” and also “happiness.” It is the establishment of divine goodness in something; the source of which cannot be perceived by people, nor can it be defined outwardly, nor can it be limited by anything; rather, something with barakah in it is known as mubarak, and has an unexplainable increase and benefit from Allah. [Mufradaat al-Qur’an, al-Isfahani]

7 Ways to Use the Qur’an to Improve Your Life

Having more barakah in our riches does not imply that we have more money in our pockets; rather, it signifies that the benefits of our money are spread out over a longer period of time. Barakah in everything, including our money, is a part of Allah SWT’s predetermined sustenance for us. It rises and falls in proportion to our good and negative deeds.

So, how do we incorporate Barakah into our daily lives?

  1. Make a legal (halal) and healthy living.

You must guarantee that your area of business does not conflict with Islamic law and that your wealth is derived from legal sources. This covers the type of employment you do, who you work for, and how much money they make. You must make certain that your work is moral and ethical.

2. Work with dedication, honesty, and excellence.

Do not accept a single dime unless you have earned it. Don’t squander the time and resources that your boss has paid for. At employment, be trustworthy and honest. Cheating or deception in a sale, as well as immoral practises such as bribes, all lower barakah. [Mafatih al-Ghaib, al-Razi]

3. Make your intention for Allah’s sake.

Purify your intention to earn money for Allah’s sake, to provide for your family, to avoid borrowing and asking for help from others, and to do good deeds for others.

4. As much as possible, avoid all forms of interest.

Taking interest or paying it out are examples of this. If you have to pay it due to debt, work as hard as you can to pay it off quickly, then pledge not to do so again.

5. Be grateful for what you have.

“And if you all give gratitude (to Me for what I have given you), I will surely increase you,” Allah says. [14:7 in the Qur’an]. By worshipping and obeying Allah, you can thank Him with your words and heart. Make excellent use of the blessings He bestows on you.

6. Donate to charity

This includes the mandatory charitable contributions (zakat, sadaqatul fitr, and qurbani for those with sufficient wealth). It’s also a charitable option for excellent causes. “Charity does not reduce wealth,” the Prophet PBUH stated. [Muslim]. Although the physical amount reduces, the remaining amount draws barakah, ensuring that the true benefit is not diminished. [al-Nawawi, Muslim Sharh]

7. Increase your piety by being more God-conscious.

SWT Allah “Whoever is mindful of Allah, He provides for them a way out (of any hardship) and nourishment from which they cannot comprehend,” says the Prophet. [65:2-3 in the Qur’an]

8. Put your complete trust in Allah.

“Know that Allah is providing for you and maintaining you at all times,” Allah SWT says. Do not be worried and afraid all of the time; this is from the shaytan, who seeks to inculcate fear of poverty while Allah provides benefits [al-Quran 2:268]. “…and whomever puts their whole confidence on Allah, then He is sufficient for them,” He SWT adds. [65:3 in the Quran]

9. Create a space in your home for prayer (salah).

Work to make required prayers a part of your family’s routine, while also encouraging voluntary (nafl) prayers. [Tafsir al-Biqa’i]

10. You can read the Qur’an at home.

Reading Surah al-Waqi’ah is said to keep a home free of poverty. “Indeed, the house in which the Quran is recited—the kindness [in it] rises…” stated the Prophet PBUH. “Things are made easier for its family,” says another version. [Tafsir of Ibn Kathir]

11. Give gifts and be generous.

Give the people you care about items they enjoy, made from the things you enjoy. Begin with your immediate family, then go on to relatives, and finally neighbours. Fight the impulse to be stingy by becoming more giving and open-hearted.

12. Respect your parents by being obedient, dutiful, and respectful.

This is a method of extending one’s life and ensuring one’s survival. [al-Sha’rani, Lawaqih al-Anwar al-Qudsiyya] [al-Sha’rani, Lawaqih al-Anwar al-Qudsiyya]

13. Maintain family relationships and treat relatives well.

Only when piety and God-fearing are joined with the act of enjoining familial ties does the barakah come into play.

[Sahih Ibn Hibban]

14. Be truthful and Honest.

Never lie or say false oaths [Ibn Hajr, Fath al-Bari]

15. You should always give more than you owe.

When selling or paying someone, provide a little more than what you owe them [al-Munawi, Sharh Fayd al Qadeer].

16. Begin working in the early hours of the morning.

After Fajr, get to work and don’t sleep through the early hours of the day. As the Prophet PBUH requested, “Oh Allah, provide barakah to my Ummah in their early-morning labour,” try to work in the mornings. [Sunan, Ibn Majah]

17. Eat with your friends.

“…get together to consume your meal, and speak Allah’s name over it (bismillah), and you will be blessed in it,” the Prophet PBUH stated. [Sunan, Abu Dawud] “Eat together, all of you, and do not separate individually, for the barakah is in the group,” and “Eat together, all of you, and do not separate individually, because the barakah is in the group.” [Sunan, Ibn Majah]

18. Invite the religious to partake of your meal.

The Prophet (PBUH) offered a dua for his host, asking for righteous individuals to eat from his meal, attracting barakah. It also encourages good company, which alters the home’s environment. [Sunan al-Kubra, al-Bayhaqi]

19. Solicit forgiveness.

Say “astaghfirullah” frequently in your house and wherever to seek Allah’s pardon. [Shu’ab al Imaan, al-Bayhaqi]

20. Treat others with respect.

Be easygoing, compassionate, and forgiving of others, including your spouse and family, as well as those that wrong you. This should motivate you to mend your relationships with anyone with whom you or your family may have a rift. [Fayd al-Qadeer, al-Munawi]

21. Stay away from being wasteful and expensive.

Do not be wasteful and excessive, nor overly attached to material possessions: this includes finishing one’s food and living in moderation. [ibid]

22. Invoke Allah SWT to bestow wealth upon you.

When the Prophet PBUH was asked to pray for young Anas (r.a), among other things, the first thing he prayed for was wealth [Bukhari]. Request that Allah provide the wealth in your hands rather than your heart.
