Natural disasters and adversity can teach us patience and sincerity. Even if we are disturbed and disoriented, we should never doubt Allah s.w.t’s ability to improve our condition and grant us relief. Allah s.w.t. is the sole one from whom we seek forgiveness and assistance, and He is the one who answers His slaves’ prayers. As a result, we should never give up hope and instead pray and turn to Him in every crisis.

The Quran provides us with guidance. We can learn from the Prophets’ and prior communities’ experiences. They teach us how to face and respond to life’s gifts and challenges as faithful slaves of Allah s.w.t. in order to attain the best results in this life and the next.

The narrative of Prophet Yunus a.s. is one of several. According to the Quran:

And Jonah (Yunus) was indeed one of the messengers. (Remember) when he fled to the overloaded ship. Then (to save it from sinking,) he drew straws (with other passengers). He lost (and was thrown overboard). Then the whale engulfed him while he was reproaching his own self. Had he not (constantly) glorified (Allah). he would have certainly remained in its belly until the Day of Resurrection. But We cast him onto the open (shore), (totally) worn out. and caused a squash plant to grow over him. We (later) sent him (back) to (his city of) at least one hundred thousand people, They believed, so We let them live out their lives.

(Surah As-Saffat, 37:139-148)

Prophet Yunus a.s. attempted to awaken his community to the truth, according to the account. They refused to listen despite numerous tries. Prophet Yunus a.s. was a human person who became so enraged that he abandoned them to their fate. He was well aware that their acts would result in their own demise.

The ship that Prophet Yunus a.s. boarded was later trapped in a storm and abandoned to the elements. There was still additional weight to get rid of after dumping stuff off the overloaded ship in order to keep afloat. After that, the crew decided to draw lots. To rescue the ship from sinking, Prophet Yunus a.s. was tossed overboard.

A person can’t possibly survive in the middle of the sea with nothing to cling to. Then Allah s.w.t. dispatched a whale to swallow Prophet Yunus a.s. As much as the Prophet managed to avoid the merciless water, he was then trapped in the whale’s belly.

The Prophet a.s. did not receive permission from his Lord to leave his society, according to the Tafsir of Jalalain, who explains verse 142. Even in the face of rejection and false claims, he had a responsibility to continue directing his community to the truth and to their own well-being. This clarifies his situation.

Prophet Yunus a.s. thought on his mistakes in the whale’s guts, imprisoned amid the dead void of darkness, and prayed to Allah s.w.t:

And (remember) when the Man of the Whale stormed off (from his city) in a rage, thinking We would not restrain him. Then in the (veils of) darkness, he cried out, “There is no god (worthy of worship) except You. Glory be to You! I have certainly done wrong.” So We answered his prayer and rescued him from anguish. And so do We save the believers.”

(Surah Al-Anbiyaa’, 21:87-88)

5 Effective Duas for Protection from any Harm

As Prophet Yunus a.s. was liberated from the whale’s belly and put back out to sea, Allah s.w.t. paved the way of hope for him through this prayer of repentance. By Allah s.w.twill, .’s he eventually found himself on the seashore, exhausted from the rigours of his journey. Allah allowed a gourd tree to grow above the Prophet while he was recovering, providing shade and protection from deadly insects.

Later in the Quran, we learn that Prophet Yunus a.s. was dispatched to a village. Scholars disagree as to whether he was transferred to the same village as when he left or to a new one entirely. The Quran simply states that it was a city with a population of at least 100,000 people. They eventually came to believe in his appeal to truth and goodness.
